Sunshine Coast Council would like to get your feedback on the proposed playground removal from Buhk Family Park.

Buhk Family Park is located north of the Alexandra Headland Surf Club and contains the skate park, picnic shelters, sun lounges and a small playground.

The purpose of the consultation is to help council make future decisions about upgrades to Buhk Family Park and the playground.

Community Engagement
Some of the play equipment within the playground is due for replacement. Council is assessing whether to renew or remove the playground. Council has liaised with some community stakeholder groups, including Alex Community Association, whose preference is to remove the playground and return it to an open grassed area.

Council is seeking feedback to ensure that the playground’s removal reflects the views of the wider community.

Reasons for its removal include:

  • the playground takes up a proportionally large area within the prominent foreshore park
  • the removal of the playground will create a larger and more functional grassed area for the community to congregate and host events
  • the current playground gets limited use with people preferring to use other playgrounds in the area, including the playground on the southern side of the surf club building.

Please complete the survey by 5pm 24 November 2017. You can take the survey here.

Where to from here
By completing the survey, you will help council to determine whether the playground’s removal reflects the views of the wider community.

The funding for this project is scheduled for the 2019/20 financial year.

Overview
The park is centrally located in Alexandra Headland, is adjacent to local businesses, and has grown in popularity as a place to host community events.

Some of the events that have occurred within the park in recent years include the Alexandra Headland 100 year anniversary celebrations, the annual Christmas carols, the Sunshine Coast Marathon, the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships and Surf Slam.

The tiered stage area and event power that was recently constructed as part of the skate park upgrade will increase the opportunity for community events within the park.

Nearby playgrounds
Buhk Family Park is in close proximity to other playgrounds. On the southern side of the surf club is Wilkes Family Park, which has a playground and is conveniently located near picnic shelters and toilets.
Nelson Park, located 300m away, has a fenced playground and is being upgraded now.

Other playgrounds within the area include those at Pearce Park, Alex Bluff and along Mooloolaba’s foreshore.
