Sundayze Opera in the Park in Alex

Imagine a grand piano in Nelson Park?  Supplemented by magnificent pianists and wonderful singers prepared to educate the audience to the joys of Opera, and happy to indulge us with some familiar musical excerpts.  What a wonderful concert……. But what an awful June Sunday weather wise.  Probably the bitterest, coldest, windiest, rain filled day we have had this year – although joyfully the voices mostly sent the rain away during the 2 hour concert.  Thank you SCRC Events – at least 150 people appreciated where our rates money is going!  And Nelson Park Okinja Road end was a surprisingly great venue with the buildings behind creating an amphitheatre effect!   (Actually we did’nt count the many people hiding in the warmth of their nearby apartments or verandahs)

Community and Cultural Events Sub Committee

This sub-committee is still being formed, but we have received a number of suggestions to create more community events in Alex for the local residents.

Among current suggestions being considered are:

  • A Picnic Concert in Nelson Park (once the site of local circuses)
  • An Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition on the Headland
  • A “re-claim the Street” Party

If you are interested in developing community spirit, your participation would be greatly welcomed!

Reports Being Considered

Sunshine Coast Community Plan

When talking of Community, it encompasses a very big world - perhaps best described in an elegant digital brochure named the Sunshine Coast Community Plan - which was endorsed by the SCRC at its meeting on May 18th 2011.

Many of our residents participated in the Our Place Our Future and other community consultations of recent years.  The leading recommendation of the Plan will be a familiar refrain for all those seeking to protect Alex:

The community recognises that to become more sustainable, there is a need to:

  • protect the region's precious natural assets and lifestyle
